While baseball is considered America’s national pastime, many Southerners may disagree. Southern culture thrives on college football. For some Alabama fans, football is more than a source of entertainment; it is a lifestyle. Part of this lifestyle is based on the many traditions that surround each game. From tailgating to the Elephant Stomp to the Million Dollar Band, Alabama football games are more than a game, they are an experience.

At Alabama, this craze begins when dozens of Porta-Potties line the Quad on Friday before game days, which begin in early September of each year. Thousands of fans fill the stands of Bryant-Denny Stadium for home games, but while fans may begin their Alabama football season in the stadium, band members begin about a mile down the road on Butler Field. This web exhibit takes a look at this organization and the role they play in creating an atmosphere for Alabama fans.
